#THISISENDOMETRIOSIS

This March, photographer and Endometriosis advocate Georgie Wileman created a campaign for Endometriosis Awareness Month – she called it #THISISENDOMETRIOSIS.

To participate, followers were asked to date each of their Endometriosis-related scars (no matter how small) with a pen with each year it was opened. Participants were then asked to connect the scars with a single line and take a photo on white sheets using natural daylight.

Wileman reached out to us via Instagram and asked if we would participate. Of course, we said yes. And before we knew it, our staff members were proudly posting photos of their scars, as well.

#THISISENDOMETRIOSIS is not only powerful, but it’s also breathtaking. It’s eye-opening in the sense that we literally get to see that no two cases of Endometriosis are the same.

I had the opportunity to ask Wileman a few questions about what has inspired her to continue growing this project, which started with a photographic project of the same name.

“Five years ago, I was completely disabled from pain, and beginning the tests and surgery that would ultimately diagnose me,” Wileman said. “I have always had plans for my future, but at that point, they seemed incredibly distant.”

This answer enlightened me. The message she sends is one that resonates not just with me personally, but throughout the Endometriosis community, as well.

Wileman uses each person (and their journey) as her muse.

There is no one perfect canvas and people with Endometriosis keep Wileman as motivated as ever to bring the awareness we need.

“Without the words of someone in the support group, I would still be on my back, covered in heat pads, barely conscious, and on pain medication,” she said. “Excision surgery is currently the best treatment for Endometriosis; I need to pass this message on. This surgery is currently barely known, and extremely hard to come by without spending a fortune out-of-pocket. This isn’t good enough,” she continued. “There needs to be awareness, understanding, and education. We need to be seen; we need to be heard. Let’s make some noise.”
