Endometriosis is a progressive inflammatory condition that affects one in 10 women (AKA Endoviduals) in the United States. One of Endometriosis‘s most prevalent symptoms is chronic pain. (Common symptoms include heavy bleeding, nausea or vomiting, pain during sexual intercourse, bowel or urinary problems, and infertility.) The worst part? There isn’t a cure. There is, however, an ample supply of medical marijuana—which offers a holistic approach to pain management.
Whether you’re already using medical marijuana to ease your Endometriosis pain or you’re thinking about ditching traditional pain medication for something a bit more holistic, here are a few benefits to adding medical cannabis to your list of treatment options.
1. Cannabis Sativa contains anti-inflammatory properties.
Research has shown that inflammation impacts the development and growth of Endometriosis. Luckily for us, cannabis contains anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation.
But, don’t worry! That doesn’t mean you have to start rolling joints to feel pain relief. (Unless you want to, of course.) CBD oil, which is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, has been shown to reduce inflammation, too.
2. Cannabis is an antiemetic drug.
Cannabis is an antiemetic drug (a drug that is effective against vomiting and nausea). This is why many people use cannabis to alleviate symptoms caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chron’s Disease.
3. Smoking marijuana may reduce depression, anxiety, and stress.
According to a study conducted by researchers at Washington State University (it was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders), smoking cannabis may reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress.
Even so, some say using marijuana to treat depression has its drawbacks, including “amotivational syndrome“—which causes marijuana users to become apathetic and socially withdrawn. So, as always, do your research before you make any definite decisions.
4. CBD may improve sleep.
Although more research needs to be done, studies suggest that CBD may improve sleep and prevent nightmares. This is because CBD suppresses REM sleep, which may benefit those who are prone to having crazy dreams.
5. Weed could make sex better.
According to the Journal of Sexual Medicine, there is a distinct correlation between marijuana usage and frequency of sex. Bonus: Cannabis has been proven to relieve pain during sex.
