Here’s How I Get That #ButYouDontLookSick Glow

Ever since I began wearing makeup more frequently my thoughts have turned ominous. My ultimate nightmare would be stopping short and watching my purse topple off the front seat and onto the floor of my car, throwing all of my things everywhere. I used to leave the house wearing just lipstick. What happened?

In high school, I sported goth/punk attire, and oddly enough, did nothing fun with my makeup. I wore natural and neutral colored lipstick because I was afraid to stick out more than I already did (FYI no piercings or hair dye, either – I was punk in my heart!)

Recently, I decided to try something new and scary as Hell – put on a color that stood out. I went from soft pinks and mauve to bright reds and magenta.

Shades that shimmered and palettes that popped were finally mine.

I no longer felt shy or concerned about what people thought. Beauty products are supposed to help enhance what we already possess, so wearing makeup and dressing up should be fun and fantastic.

Makeup is more than just a statement.

I’ve actually heard people call women who wear generous amounts of makeup “false advertisers.” Can you believe that?

There are plenty of reasons we wear makeup, in fact, until recently, at least as far as my concealer goes, I did it for fun. I genuinely enjoy it; I like playing with my color palettes.

The older I get, the more concealer I use to cover up the circles under my eyes from lack of sleep or the blemishes that seem to pop up for every birthday candle I add. As a stay-at-home mom, my beauty definitely takes a backseat to everyone else’s needs. Add my debilitating Endometriosis, and I no longer care if what I’m wearing matches when I leave the house.

Sometimes, I think we take our well-being for granted and sacrifice it in the name of family and friends. It took me a long time to rid myself of being a makeup martyr. I don’t have to leave my lipstick behind – I can put it on to go to the store and grab a loaf of bread because it just brightens up my day. I work from home and I still put makeup on occasionally because sometimes it makes me more productive.

I’m in a frame of mind that tells me that no matter what and no matter who is looking (or lack thereof) – I also count.

I have wasted too many years feeling awful and it’s time I give myself something to look forward to. When I walk into a store and look through the beauty aisle, those lights call to me. Everything has this beautiful glow about it and it pulls me in, begging for me to feel the softness of the blender brush.

It’s like a siren song hums me over to gaze at the hues of eye shadow and find that one color that goes perfectly with my eyes or the blush that highlights my cheekbones with a hint of color. And the glitter – OH! All the glitter everywhere! I could roll in it a la Scrooge McDuck in his money.

But the beauty aisle screams to me for ME- not because I am doing it for my husband, the public, or work. In the end, I am doing it because when I look back at myself, it gives me an extra glimmer of confidence. I don’t need makeup to love myself, but it makes me feel better. And there is nothing wrong with that.

There is nothing wrong with your smokey eyes or your perfectly-painted-on wings.  You do it for you and you only.

Here are a few of my favorite brands that help give me that #ButYouDon’tLookSick glow.

Too Faced La Creme Mystical Effects Lipstick in Unicorn Tears

This sherbet-tasting, iridescent lipstick goes on smooth and is great on its own or with your favorite shade. It also changes according to your body chemistry.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Lengthen those lashes! The brush shape helps my lashes look super long.

Maybelline Makeup Dream Fresh BB Cream

When I’m having a flare-up that heats my face to the point of looking like a Roman tomato, this is my go-to. It’s not too heavy but covers great.

Rimmel Match Perfection 2-in-1 Concealer and Highlighter

Have you been binge-watching “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”? No one will know with a layer of this bad boy…

e.l.f. Flawless Eye Shadow

I love pretty much any color that has glitter. (In case you didn’t notice…I love glitter.) P.S. e.l.f.’s matte colors are awesome to shade together.

Urban Decay Naked Smoky Eyeshadow Palette

This is my favorite purple from UD. It’s purple but not too dark and looks great with any eye color.

Bésame Cosmetics

Vintage-inspired makeup based on colors from the past. I received blush and a sampler of mini lipsticks from a friend. She is a goddess for introducing me to them. So many red hues from the early 1900s, including a Disney-inspired palette for those of you who love “Snow White.”

wet n wild Color Icon Rainbow Highlighter

LOVE this. I find that the blue end up the strongest color, so you’ll need to mix it up really well. Even so, this looks great on your cheekbones and you can even put it on your eyes or on lipstick for extra pizzazz.

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick

Kat Von D’s creamy, vegan makeup is amazing. Red lipstick can BE your outfit.

wet n wild Silk Finish Lip Stick, Fuchsia with Blue Pearl

This stick is a part of the Silk Finish collection. It’s a fun and beautiful color to wear alone or over a darker shade.
